Ideation

To begin the process, I made a running list of themes I knew from having read the play (Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare) and symbols present throughout. I then created multiple thumbnails as a way of visualizing the symbols I had chosen as prominent.

Design

I knew I wanted to work with the many dualities present in the book and found the playing card to be a good reference to that idea, while still allowing me to add other symbols into the image through illustration (the ring, the pearl and the juxtaposition between the masculine and feminine).

Included is my original mock up of the poster for Twelfth Night with the white background.

Refining

I noticed, when printing, the coloring was off so you can see a difference in the shades and hues depicted in the final example on the right. I also tweaked the faces and details, such as the embellishments on the crowns, after receiving feedback on the lack of readability of the smaller items. Expanding the blue background allowed for a less constricted viewing experience and an emphasis on the playing card imagery.
